Talk:Supreme Court of Mississippi
Supreme Court of Mississippi was nominated as a Social sciences and society good article, but it did not meet the good article criteria at the time (August 12, 2023, reviewed version). There are suggestions on the review page for improving the article. If you can improve it, please do; it may then be renominated. |

Areas for expansion
[edit]- How are justices appointed/retained? Has this changed over time?
- Particular powers of appellate review?
- Historic decisions of the court? Role in civil rights conflicts?

Current Justices' biographies
[edit]I agree with the Split Notice on this section so I'll be working on splitting out the individual biographies into their own pages. Rosiestep (talk) 19:57, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Justice bio
[edit]The bio of Justice Dickinson has been deleted when split because it turns out it was a direct copy of the supreme court's website. It is unclear whether Mississippi allows this reuse, and this should be clarified before it is put back in the article or spun out.
You might also want to make sure that Justice Randolph's bio is not a direct copy also. — Coren (talk) 05:12, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

I'll be taking a look at this, apologies for the long delay in getting it reviewed.
Quick fail criteria
[edit] It is a long way from meeting any one of the six GA criteria (WP:GACR)
No copyright violations
No cleanup banners
Stable
No previous GA nomination
I'm sorry to say that I don't think this meets Good Article criterion 3a: it is not detailed enough. I would especially expect to see more on the history of the court, from its inception to the present day, and information on any significant cases.
Specific points that could be expanded upon:
History
- What were the circumstances around the decision to establish the court in the 1817 constitution? What was its effect on the existing legal system?
- "The constituencies, known as the northern, central, and southern districts, changed little over the ensuing decades." - what areas did these cover? Were they all the same size, demographics?
- Why was the High Court of Errors and Appeals replaced?
- What was the context of the 1899 referendum?
- What was the context of the 1976 amendment?
- Why didn't Republicans or independents stand in elections between 1916 and 1980?
- Why did the new rules in the 1980s lead to "tension with legislature"?
- Why did the Mississippi Supreme Court have a high caseload burden in 1993?
- Is there any more context around the first female chief justice and the first black justice?
Jurisdiction
- Is there a reason the court can't issue advisory opinions unlike other state supreme courts?
Decisions
- Is there a reason the court has historically "exercised judicial restraint" and favored the status quo?
Administrative responsibilities
- Is there any significant example of when the court has appointed lower-court judges to serve under the three allowed circumstances?
Impeachments and removal
- I assume the circumstances in this section have never occurred, but if they have then obviously details would be appropriate.
Elections and seniority
- Do the requirements compare to other state supreme courts in any interesting way?
- Under what circumstances does the governor fill court vacancies?
Other
- There is no mention of any cases that have gone through this court. What significant cases has it considered in its 206-year history?
- What significant judges have been members of this court, and what did they do there? I see that there is a separate linked list of former and current justices of the court, but any relevant information could belong in this article as well, at least in brief.
- Is there anything interesting or notable about the court building itself?
- There are only four non-map cited works in this article, and only two published post-1904. A more varied set of references may help improve the article.
You may get inspiration from the GA Oregon Supreme Court, but bear in mind that it was promoted way back in 2007.
