Whites only prom - the initial discussion
[edit]if i have time later, i will add this news item [1] to this article...unless of course someone out there wants to get started on it now. Kingturtle 01:17 May 2, 2003 (UTC)
Whites only prom - February 2006
[edit]I have replaced the section that was deleted. A bit of history may be useful to understand why:
- There was a separate Whites only prom article, which covered this May 2003 story. I recommended that article for deletion (see [2]); a single prom didn't seem to justify such a broad title.
- Someone suggested that the story was still worthy of being in wikipedia. I agreed, and moved it to the Taylor County article, because Taylor County is small (8,000 folks) and this was national news. (Also, the topic seems something likely not to be forgotten for a while in that county.)
- When I moved the article, I EDITED IT SIGNIFICANTLY. I cut back on some things, and reworded. And I checked the orginal citations and used them to modify the article (and may have even added one; not sure).
- In the discussion of the Whites only prom article, someone said that it was a copyright violation. That may well have been; I'm not going back to check. If it was, it was because it quoted extensively from one of the sources used for that article.
- The assumption was made by someone that since the original article was a copyright violation, so too was the material that was moved to the Taylor County page. That's a reasonable assumption except that it isn't true of what was actually on the Taylor County page.
- What was left (and what I put back) is, I believe, NOT a copyright violation. The material comes from all three sources listed; nor is it word-for-word except for two quotations.
- To the extent there IS still a copyright violation, I strongly suggest putting a tag on the section, not deleting it. And of course it would be appreciated if some detail could be posted here about the possible violation.

- Hello, four year old comment. There is now an article at segregated prom which appears to be a vast improvement, and to which I have added a link in this article.--Milowent (talk) 04:36, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Demographics
[edit]I understand that this article has been the subject of controversy in the past - presumably due to a racial issue. However, without access to the archived discussion, I don't know what that controversy was. The article seems very much like a stub now with a bulk of the text devoted to demographics - might a stub template be appropriate?--Ekilfeather 23:57, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
