Does this merit an article of its own? KJ
I don't think so. I don't even think the field exists. I suggest deletion after June 2004 if no one can say it exists. Kd4ttc 19:13, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)
This field does exist. It's a board-certified field recognized by the American Board of Pathology. Transfusion medicine specialists act as consultants to the blood bank and physicians in the areas of immunohematology, blood product management, coagulation, therapeutic apheresis, etc... I'm a fellow in transfusion medicine. When I get the chance, I'll try to clean up the article page. Its clearly anemic and riddled with inaccuracies.
- I agree that the topic does merit an article of its own. I was a blood banker (medical technologist) for over a decade, and I can tell you that, yes, transfusion medicine does exist as a medical specialty. These physicians can be crucial in the treatment of patients who suffer transfusion reactions or need more specialized blood products than are routinely used at many hospitals. When I have time, I'll try to get some more information into this article. --MEGaMark 02:12, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
I am currently a 31 year veteran in the field of transfusion medicine and YES it is important, not just because I work in it, but because more patients and their families need to be aware of the risks, options and outcomes associated with transfusion of blood and blood components.
