Style and names
[edit]This is a U.S. newspaper chain, and I've used U.S. newspaper style (that is, the Associated Press), which uses neither quote marks nor underlining for newspaper names.
"The" is part of the name of several of these newspapers; please do not lowercase it without checking.
And according to the company Web site, its name is The McClatchy Company, not McClatchy Newspaper Company. AP style is "The McClatchy Co." Maurreen 06:00, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Question: Does Wikipedia use AP style? 69.129.37.114 21:50, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Sale
[edit]The sale is being reported at $6.5 billion ... and the San Jose Mercury News is going to be sold ... http://tampabay.bizjournals.com/tampabay/stories/2006/03/13/daily12.html SyFyMichael 15:58, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
- I am confused, but this press report seems important to this article. SaltyBoatr 17:27, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Mideast conflict
[edit]It would be interesting if we could gather information on the editorial policies followed by the various McClatchy newspapers, notably on the Mideast Conflict, which is one of the most controversial topics in contemporary journalism. ADM (talk) 02:43, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Requested move 2 February 2019
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Moved: as this wasn't formatted as a multi-move request and the disambiguation page had {{dab|surname}} on it already, I have moved the disambiguation page to McClatchy (surname) per Black Falcon with McClatchy (disambiguation) pointing to it. NPASR on the DAB page for further discussion, but consensus is clearly that the company is the primary topic. (closed by non-admin page mover) SITH (talk) 16:01, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
The McClatchy Company → McClatchy – per WP:COMMONNAME. The company is simply referred to as "McClatchy", e.g. [1], it is also referred to as McClatchy in the article text. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:03, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Their official website is mcclatchy.com and their logo only lists McClatchy. – Broccoli & Coffee (Oh hai) 20:57, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support The company references I see are just "McClatchy" and the chance for confusion in Wikipedia is limited since the other articles with the name in the title are people with a first name. Even if we did need something more specific, it would be McClatchy (company). (Also support moving McClatchy to McClatchy (disambiguation).) RevelationDirect (talk) 13:47, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support per WP:COMMONNAME. UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:00, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support - "McClatchy" appears to be the common name of the company. Regarding the disambiguation page, renaming it to McClatchy (disambiguation) would be acceptable, but I suggest McClatchy (surname) would be a better option. -- Black Falcon (talk) 17:53, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support per Wp:common. Störm (talk) 14:22, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Criticism
[edit]Character Assassination April 8, 2019
[edit]I suggest to add a paragraph about the April 8, 2019 $150M defamation lawsuit. How about the draft paragraph below? I tried to include both point of views (POV), with sources.
On April 8, 2019 a $150M defamation lawsuit against McClatchy was filed. Citing that “article after article, McClatchy and its reporters exhibited an institutional hatred for Nunes, spite, ill-will and the intent to hurt Nunes and impugn his character,” the complaint states. According to Devin Nunes, the McClatchy conspired to spread false and damaging information. A McClatchy spokeswoman said that Nunes' lawsuit is “wholly without merit”.[1]

- I have removed this. The article on Fresno Bee (where the articles in question were published) already covers Nunes' poor relationship with that newspaper, and I do not think the mere filing of a lawsuit is noteworthy in the context of a 160+-year-old company. Neutralitytalk 03:04, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Neutrality: Thanks, and I agree. I edited the original addition because it needed cleaning up, but also because I didn't realize it was on the Fresno Bee page. It may be worth expanding there, but that's a separate conversation, and regardless, it's the more appropriate place for this topic. – Broccoli & Coffee (Oh hai) 03:35, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
