Posting discussion from previous page: The T, you may wish to check Eloquence's last two edits to this article. You may disagree with them. ;) -- Oliver P. 20:23 May 14, 2003 (UTC)

To clarify: It seems that The T considers "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" to be a separate game from "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", while Eloquence considers "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" to be the same game as "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", but just involving a different main character. Clearly this is a deep philosophical conundrum, and I think the problem itself merits discussion in the article, with references to the appropriate journals where the issue is discussed. ;) Actually, I've done a Google search for the term, and it does seem to come up as a game in its own right (see e.g. here), so I have identified it as such in the article. And don't ask me why I care about this problem; I don't know the answer any more than you do... -- Oliver P. 17:46 1 Jun 2003 (UTC)

To be honest, I haven't the foggiest idea what a "passthru cartridge" is, and I was hoping that if I made the phrase into a link, someone would end up writing an explanation at that article. But okay, if "Sonic & Knuckles" is the only passthru cartridge ever, hopefully someone will write the explanation there instead... :) By the way, what is the correct way to format computer game titles? Should they be in italics, or quotation marks, or what? I suppose I should check to see if there is a policy on that... -- Oliver P. 22:33 2 Jun 2003 (UTC)

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the second game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series." -- Would it be appropriate to specify whether this is a computer game (eg, for MS-Windows, or Macintosh, or whatever), or a nintendo game, or whatever it is? Pagan 09:55, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hack stuff

I removed all of the hack stuff. I just don't think it's at all relevant. It doesn't offer any insights whatsoever into the Sonic 2 game, it's just information about something others have done. What remains is information about the game, and its beta version, which I think is as it should be--the article is about a Sega game, not a hack of said game. - Vague | Rant 09:12, Dec 19, 2004 (UTC)

But okay, if "Sonic & Knuckles" is the only passthru cartridge ever, hopefully someone will write the explanation there instead Well, I guess the Game Genie and Pro Action Replay would fall in the same cathegory, even though the "Lock-On" technology in Sonic & Knuckles involved more things such as checking for specific serial numbers in the header and acting differently depending on which game was connected.

I think Knuckles The Echidna in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 should be considered as a different game since it's not just a new revision of the original game. It also removes some playable characters and game modes, adds or modifies certain in-game objects and even runs under a different engine.

By the way, even though it's not mentioned in the credits, Tim Skelly was also the Art Director of this game. Also, Tom Payne made several enemies as well as the foreground in the Metropolis Zone.

ICEKnight, I'm suprised you didn't add info about those sketches you found. Don't worry, I already did some preliminary work; I added a link to the page (no, I'm not going to subject people to that insufferable "shoot the wasps" game) and some info on the "Sabaku Zone" thing.

"Gold" Sonic

This article should discuss the "golden Sonic" you get for collecting all the Chaos emeralds/ entering the cheat code. Also, does anyone know if the look of golden Sonic was influenced by Dragonball Z? It seems to me that it probably was, but I don't have any proof. --Carl 03:05, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

His name is Super Sonic. The article breifly mentions him, but it may be useful for someone to expand on the reference, as you suggest. As for whether he was influenced by DBZ, to quote the Wikipedia article on Super Sonic, "It has yet to be proven that this appearance, as well as Super Sonic's enhanced abilities and the very idea of Super Sonic itself, derives from Super Saiya-jin, the highest form of a Saiya-jin in the television series Dragon Ball Z, as well as its subsidiary, Dragon Ball GT." Although I had heard that as well... - MIT Trekkie 03:47, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)

Hidden Palace code

Hmm... I can't seem to remember how one gets to HPZ in the final game after entering the Game Genie code. I'm quite sure you had to go to Death Egg Zone in the level select screen, but it's been a while since I used that code, and I can't remember.

Also, it might be helpful if somebody added the Action Replay code.

--Aurochs 00:46, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)

Redirect

Does Marcus mind explaining why he made this page redirect to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) without any discussion on which page should be the main one? Both titles for the console are recognized by English-speaking people, and his "title for the main STH page includes the word Genesis" doesn't cut it. --Aurochs

See his talk page. --Nick R 12:17, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Why does this redirect to the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 page? Shouldn't it, since it specifies Mega Drive, redirect directly to the 16-bit version, like the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) does? Tom Temprotran 23:03, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

8 bit, 16 bit... first?

There seems to be confusion on which title came first (or else it's unclear because I'm reading it wrong). The 16 bit page claims the 8 bit was based on it, though a distinct title. The 8 bit page claims that it is the first instance of the character Tails, because it came before the 16 bit version. Neither assertion is cited, so I don't know which to trust. Could we get some clarity on that? 98.219.192.79 (talk) 03:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

I believe it's that the 8-bit was based on the 16-bit, as the 16-bit one was the "main project" that they were really concentrating on, but the 8-bit happened to come out slightly earlier. Sergecross73 msg me 04:02, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Prototypes

"On February 23, 2008, 464 Mega Drive prototypes were released. Five of these prototypes were later builds of Sonic 2. These prototypes were near-finished and by this time, had been ridden of the lost stages (Hidden Palace, Wood Zone, Genocide City, etc.)" anymore info on that ? 91.37.198.76 (talk) 22:00, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Notice: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was recently copy-pasted to the new page "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)", instead of being moved there. Subsequently the talkpage was not moved along so I've cut it out and put it back here where it belongs. --Steerpike 18:17, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

In the last days I've invested some time to happend:
Sonic 2's version history was spaced on 4 (!) articles with 5 different names:
Robth was the friendly admin who merged them again. I've just archived the old discussions, there's no point in merging them too. --32X 14:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

General notice on editing this article

This article seems to be a popular sandbox for some people but just to clear things up, the following notes should be taken into account when making changes to Sonic 2:

 • Use a passive tense to describe actions in the game or address the subject as "the player" or "Sonic". Phrases like "You have to jump on Robotnik 8 eight times to defeat him" are non-encyclopedic. You can't assume the person reading this article will play the game.
 • Please keep the name of Eggman consistent throughout the article. Pick either Robotnik or Eggman and stay with that. People change the naming over and over again.
 • Describing how the finish a certain level, how to defeat bosses, detailed controls, lists of items and badniks are all non-encyclopedic. That sort of stuff belongs in Wikibooks.
 • No unsubstantiated rumors or personal opinions. I think that speaks for itself but some fanboys really need to lay it to rest.
 • Time Travel was NOT ever an intended feature of Sonic 2. This has never been confirmed by anyone from Sega. The confusion probably stems from the fact that Sonic CD and Sonic 2 were developed parallel to one another and that some gaming magazines misattributed info from one game to another. The allegedly "similarities" between some levels are completely coincedental. But I think I already sufficiently explained within the article itself.

If anyone wishes to add notes to this list, feel free to do so. --Steerpike 14:17, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok, that's sorted out then. --Steerpike 18:59, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Infobox

Small note on the Infobox: I substituted the Title Screen image for the cover of the box, as that seems more in line with the general policy on video-games, and the approach in general to Sonic articles. I moved the Title Screen shot further below. --Steerpike 12:24, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Time Travel

Does this really belong in this article? Some people are just too eager to see secrets that aren't there. The time-travel stuff is completely unsubstantiated. So what if Metropolis and the axed Wood Zone share the tubes? Why couldn't they just have dropped Wood Zone and "recycled" ideas from it into Metropolis? Hill Top and Emerald Hill may share some soil pattern but but other than that the two are NOTHING alike. Both Chemical Plant and Emerald Hill share loops, but that doesn't mean they were connected with time travel. Genocide City probably uses Chimcal Plant's music because the Zone was cut very early in development and there was no tune written for it. The theories about Hidden Palace make even less sense certainly in light of the recent revelations regarding that level. I'm going to edit this and further changes should be justified on the talk page. --Steerpike 13:50, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

It's not unsubstantiated... There is some concept art depicting vague elements of time travel, some of which didn't even make it into Sonic CD (such as what appears to be an alarm clock). Metalsonic89 13:28, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Why did you reply to a nearly 2 year old comment? Besides the answer is NO. There was never any evidence of time travel, according to the interviews with the level designers. Ashura96 17:59, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Rumours?

"If you collect 100 rings, the music changes into a premix of the Death Egg track"

Can anyone confirm this? Over the last couple of days I had to revert so many bad edits I can't even tell which entries are just bogus information and which aren't. General message: please people, stop filling this article with your own personal nonsense! Now if anyone can tell me whether the first sentence is true or not... --Steerpike 11:07, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry if this is really late, but yes, that does happen in the beta. --Guess Who 23:23, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
Yes, it is true. I have entered debug mode, spawned 100 rings, and music changed. :::--89.178.252.93 16:01, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
This is just a theory, but maybe in a later version, Eggman was supposed to attack you after you got 100 rings, and it would play that music, but they scrapped that idea. Blah2 12:38, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
It's either a programming error that they didn't bother to fix at the time, or they hadn't yet added the extra life music and the Death Egg Zome music was used as a placeholder to make sure their extra life code worked. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)
The sound test number for the DEZ song in S2B was the same as the number for the extra life song in Sonic 1. This piece of data wasn't changed, hence we hear that sound play rather than the extra life sound. It's not a very significant error for a beta; the game remains playable.

The zones

Do we really need to list the zones and give descriptions of the bosses in each one? It is a little bit boring, and makes the article seem more like an instruction manual. I say we either delete that section, or strip away a lot of the detail.

I also think the Sonic 2 Beta information deserves its own article.

Perhaps the zones could be shortened. But I don't think the beta deserves its own article. It's not really that long, although the text could benefit from some restructuring. What bothers me most about this article right now (other than the fact that it's constantly "vandalised" with inane comments) is the Storyline section. It's just too long. Either we stick with the American version (what use do we have with the Japenese storyline anyway other than some curiosity information?) or we write a good synopsis incorporating elements from both. --Steerpike 14:53, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I have removed the Japanese storyline from the article. I agree that it was not needed. I added a Trivia section and changed the "Rumours" part. I do, however, believe that we should indeed include a seperate article for the Beta. Sonic Crackers has its own article, why should this not as well?
Hm, I disagree. The problem with Sonic Crackers is that it's hard to incorporate it under any other article save perhaps Knuckles Chaotix. The Sonic 2 Beta is just that, and nothing else. I think the section we have is short enough. But I'll give this page some rewrites tomorrow morning. --Steerpike 22:13, 14 November 2005 (UTC) (btw, please sign your comments with four tildes like this ~~~~)
I think that the Japanese story info is very important! It's the original, official storyline, even by today's American continuity. I've added the Japanese story back in under the Story section, but under the Zones, I don't know. Maybe it's best to just leave story info out of them completely. --Bohrok Awakener 22:55, 13 December 2005 (GMT)

Major Overhaul 15/11/05

Here is a list of changes I made with commentary:

 • First of all I abbreviated the zone commentary by removing the subheadings, as I felt this unnessecarily clogged up the article.
 • Removed most of the info on Casino Night’s slot machines. Too detailed to be of encyclopaedic value (and yes I know this term is rather shady to begin with but let’s be a bit realistic. I think it’s still fine to retain the description without the actual numbers)
 • Added a discription of the special stages in Sonic 2
 • Removed some titbits here and there to the trivia section and added some new ones.
 • Abbreviated the beta section with less subheadings.
 • Added more screenshots for variety. I wanted to order them left/right on the Zone section but this can't be done without loss of the bullet sorting. So I just put them all right. I hope you agree however this adds a bit more appeal to the page.
 • Added the Japanese release date.

Tell me what you think. --Steerpike 14:12, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Looks good to me! -- RattleMan 21:46, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Maybe...

Does anybody think that you can do Knuckles in Sonic 2 Beta? It might work... Somebody should try that and say that it CAN be done if it can, and if it can't... I think it's possible. blah2Blah2 12:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, but... huh? I did not understand a word of that...
 • This question is asked a lot. It probably can be done fairly easily (hell, someone put Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog), but I can't remember if it has. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)
Note that it would take more than simply adding on the S&K special data banks (see the Sonic and Knuckles article) to play this, though, since that data bank was made to reference data and programming specifically in Sonic 2. Certainly it could be done by adding and adapting part of that code, but it would require some knowledge of Genesis programming. -- E Liquere 02:05, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Tails information

The Trivia section's entry about the fox mythology is, in my opinion, slightly out of place... I find this is the case because it slides off the topic. To simply mention that "foxes with many tails are part of Japanese mythology" would be sufficient. Also, it seems to be lifted almost verbatim off the Green Hill Zone site. Try and word it differently, or at least credit the original site.DelanoC 10:24, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

It not only *seems* to be lifted from Green Hill Zone but it *is* lifted from Green Hill Zone. In fact I'm the one who wrote that :) Yeah I know, I tried to rephrase it a bit but there's only so many ways to say Tails is inspired on a mythological fox. Anyway I don't think this trivia entry is out of place. I mean, that's what it is: trivia. And a very good one too I might add. --Steerpike 18:54, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm suggesting to merge that article into this one, since it appears that this aircraft is a trivia bit from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (the article says it only appears in this game) JoaoRicardo 07:29, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Good suggestion, although the airplane does appear in Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as well. It even has a small cameo moment in Knuckles' Chaotix. I'm sure it features in more Sonic games still. --Steerpike 13:18, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
It also features in Sonic Advance. DelanoC 13:27, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Then this merge might not be the best solution for this. But I think that article on the plane will always be a stub. Couldn't we merge it somewhere, perhaps a general article for props in Sonic games if such exists? JoaoRicardo 18:09, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
I disagree... I think the Tornado is most relevant to this article since this was its debut appearance. Also, the Tornado only appears in cut-scenes and cameos in the other games, while in Sonic 2 it is a feature for an entire level.
The Tornado is featured in: Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Advance. This also isn't counting the Game Gear Sonic games, in which it at least appears in Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble's special stage. I believe it should stay seperate. BlazeHedgehog 06:50, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, I leave the discussion for those knowleadgeble in this game series. Just wanted to add my 2 cents, feel free to remove the merge info if this is the consensus here. :-) JoaoRicardo talk 07:09, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
I drastically expanded the Tornado article, and as such, removed the merge notice. There's still some interesting stuff to be added but I'm satisfied with it currently. Everyone agreed? --Steerpike 23:22, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Here we go again...

This article has been clogged up with useless beta information. I fail to see why exactly we need a detailed, in-depth analysis of the missing and deleted beta version's sprites and enemies, especially since the contributor added this information at the bottom of the article and not in the section devoted to the beta in the first place. I also fail to see why exactly the beta version's cheat codes are to be classified as trivia. And the addition to the emulation section makes no sense, and hardly warrants mention. This is an encyclopedia article, not a cheat code guide. If you feel a need to include all that information about the beta, (of which there is already a considerable amount of information already available all over the Internet) then I suggest we give it its own article.

Quite right. I removed it, as well as the two cheat codes at the bottom of the trivia section (I still think the original cheat codes warrant inclusion over the significance of the dates). --Steerpike 13:14, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

And again...

Why is there an "alpha" section now? No copy of Sonic 2 alpha is known to exist and virtually nothing is known of such a prototype. This is speculation and completely irrelevant to the article.

 • Fixed. Any further references to prototypes not known to exist may be deleted on sight. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

These points should be removed

*The launch of Sonic 2 was intended to be huge, so the developers wanted to pay tribute to two of the biggest
franchises in pop culture. For the West, they paid tribute to Star Wars's Death Star with The Death Egg.
For the East, they payed tribute to Dragonball Z's Super Saiyan characters with Super Sonic.

*The concept of a two-tailed fox stems from Japanese folklore. According to the mythology, foxes (called "Kitsune")
are magical beings with the ability to shapeshift. The older a fox gets, the more powerful it becomes, and the more
tails it gains. Kitsune grow a new tail every hundred years until they've reached their maximum strength of nine
tails. They are notoriously mischievous.
 • Any evidence that that was the reason for including references to Star Wars and Dragonball Z?
 • As far as I know, neither of those references (or Tails's basis in myth) have been confirmed by any of the game's staff, so they're fan speculation/original research, which don't belong on Wikipedia.

So, does anyone else agree that those points should be removed? --Nick RTalk 19:02, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree the first point sounds a bit shady, but the second point was paraphrased from Green Hill Zone, which is fairly authorative on Sonic matters. Regardless, I find these parallels to be fairly obvious myself, no? --Steerpike 23:26, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Not sure about the Death Star reference, but the Dragonball Z reference is spot-on; it's common knowledge that Sonic Team were big fans of Dragonball Z. --PeanutCheeseBar 12:44, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Ashura the Hedgehog

Someone recently put some low quality images of Ashura in this article without style or proper formatting. If it was up to me, I'd have them all removed, as two of them are pretty awful and I doubt the relevance of all three. What's the deal with Ashura anyway?? I had never even heard of that until this article. We need to discuss this. --Steerpike 10:40, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

"The deal with Ashura"? Be more specific please. I thought the article was pretty good in its treatment of the Ashura glitch and its relevance. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

The pictures are my main concern here. If Ashura is an important aspect of Sonic 2 then by all means it should be included, but I've also noticed a lot of so called "fan editing" on this section, which sometimes leads me to doubt how important it really is. Anyhoo, to get back on the pictures, I'm sorry but those Sonic sprites don't look right at all. I don't like the idea of moving gifs in Wikipedia to begin with (not that I'm argueing they shouldn't be used at all) but that) but this doesn't contribute to the article in any way. I would much prefer a complete in-game screenshot over a single sprite image. But then again this article already has quite a lot of screenshots. So, to whoever uploaded those pics: I might delete them within a few days if there is no response here. --Steerpike 01:23, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

On another note, why do we need to note who "discovered" Ashura? It sounds like "omg Charles discovered this lololol IT'S HIS NOT YOURS OMG CREDIT HERE". Perhaps a redo of this paragraph is in order? -- RattleMan 02:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Notice about Category:Sonic the Hedgehog games

This category is included in the SonicGames template, and should not be used in the article itself. --Aurochs (Talk | Block)

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but the category is still usefull. I don't know who you think you are, but it should be kept.--Ac1983fan 00:25, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
In the template SonicGames, in addition to the table of the Sonic games, there is also instruction telling the SonicGames template to include that category in all the articles the template is inserted in. So, inserting it in the article too is really inserting it twice. -- RattleMan 01:19, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi buddy. I guess I have to explain a few things to you, don't I?
First off, before you go accusing people of vandalism, check their edit count. If there are more than 100 edits, that person is most certainly not a vandal.
Second, I believe that I am a major editor of this page (even if Steerpike wrote most of it). This means that I am quite familiar with the subject matter and the contents of the page itself. I also have several other Sonic the Hedgehog-related pages on my watchlist, and realized that no consistently good editor (a category - har har har - to which N. Harmonik belongs) would remove the same category from several pages without a damn good reason.
Finally, it is considered common courtesy to ask somebody to reword an unclear statement rather than talking down to and summarily ignoring them.
--Aurochs (Talk | Block)

OMG... I am SO sorry... I am such an idiot... please forgive me.... I am really, really, really, really, really, really, really, sorry.... I am such a n00b....--Ac1983fan 19:17, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Changes as of 13/06/06

Since the article was becoming too large and cluttered by Wikipedia's standards I took the liberty of cutting the most unnecessary information out. This includes:

 • Minor rewrite of the introduction.
 • Moved the "production and release" section further the bottom of the article.
 • Cut the Japanese and European storylines and replaced it with a shorter, to-the-point description of the plot. Copy-pasting storylines from the manual is of no use to this article, and should belong in Wikibooks.
 • Drastically cut down the level section. Which boss appears in what level and how to defeat him is of no interest to the casual Wikipedia reader. The same goes for detailed level descriptions. Providing the general outline is useful enough.
 • Rearranged the development and release section to include info on the beta version and the time travel speculation.
 • The Beta version by now warrants its own page. I've kept the description in this article to the essentials and refer to the new page for full details.
 • Cuts in the trivia section.

Please comment. --Steerpike 21:00, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Chemical Plant Zone - Missing Boss?

I remember when I was about 11 years old (at the the time this sonic 2 was popular in the UK), I read in a game magazine that in some rare releases, you would not fight a boss at the end of Act 2 of Chemical Plant Zone. Instead you would run past the sign post that starts spinning, the same as you would at the end of Act 1 and then scores are added up. Can anyone tell me if this is true and why? TurboForce 11:04, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, never heard of this before. --Steerpike 11:34, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
I wish I still had the computer magazine, I remember reading something about this, it was a long time ago - 1992 or 1993. TurboForce 11:51, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Sounds to me like an Urban legend or myth started at the time. Could also be a pirate copy or a mistake. Maybe a pre-release version? Although I'm quite fascinated by 2Beta, and haven't heard about this before. Although the Beta version which was stolen from the Toyfair in 1992 had some Act 2's without bosses replaced merely by signposts, as it wasn't fully completed. Perhaps the Beta version was pirated around the time the source you were reffering to was written, so naturally the magazine believed this to be an alternate version? Either way, I'll look into this when I have time. Tquinnathome1 16:18, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Let me say: I have played lot of hacks of Sonic 2 (and the original one) and I HAVE NEVER GOT THROUGH A POST AT CHEMICAL PLANT ACT 2. It's definitively wrong. 200.55.96.101 02:18, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

No fair

How come theres a thing on the top of the sonic 2 16 bit page. But not on the other page. I think it not fair. --Philip1992 17:37, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Philip1992

Westside Island or West Side Island?

I'm pretty sure it's the former. Westside is an English word, after all. However, different sources say different things.

The storyline

It's supposed to be flat and to the point. As soon as we drag in the entire backstory and alternative Japanese translations it will sooner or later look like Sonic Adventure 2. So let's not take this any further than it is right now. --Steerpike 10:46, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Mega drive Box art should be replaced by the Genesis Box art

For the Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 articles, the box art is from Genesis. Why have the Mega Drive Box art for Sonic 2 then? I saw someone reverted the Genesis box to the mega drive. It makes no sense.~~

I reverted that, because it doesn't have to make sense. In fact, the Sonic 3 article originally had the European art as well, but apparently someone *insisted* it had to be the American art (some weird Americo-centrism, I dunno...). I don't see why there has to be a box art continuity between articles. The American art isn't better or worse than the European or Japanese art. People played this game all over the world. What the front of the box looked like is only a minor detail. So please don't change this back. --Steerpike 17:11, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
So let me get this straight, " you reverted that because it doesn't have to make sense ". You make a good point. Excellent. Go ahead and keep your european box art, and also keep that mentality, i'm sure everyone around you must love " it doesn't have to make any sense " all over.72.229.107.66 07:54, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't see any reason whatsoever why it should be the American boxart. I don't see anyway reason for it being the European boxart either but it's there, why bother changing it? Why not the Japanese box art? --Mysterious Bob 14:36, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

I really like the solution in Sonic 3D (2 different names, therefor both box covers are shown) and brought it into Sonic 3. I don't know whether it will stay there or not, but it might be a good solution here, too. Plus it shortens the vertical image size in the infobox a bit. --32X 17:43, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

The two Sonic 2 covers are nearly identical, unlike the Sonic 3 covers. There is no need to use both. -- RattleMan 21:40, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Could all regular contributors please be on the lookout for spam. Earlier today I was made to revert the lastest topic, which contained the word "S*********************************************************************************t" back to an older copy, and since I'm a newbie ad all this, it took ages! lol. Well anyway please look out for deletion and spam.

To make a quick revert go to the page history and click on the date of the version you want to revert to. This will bring you to a previous version of the article. Simply click edit (a red warning that you are editing an older version will appear) and save the page without further changes. Cheers. --Steerpike 21:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Could someone actually put the Sonic 2 Alpha and Sonic 2 Beta pages back, as they were references in a piece of coursework of mine a few months back, and I was told just today (11/06/2007) that all sources needed printing. (I was told to write about a computer game) Thanks, ~~Neo 2.3 Hylan 13:02, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

If they are important for yourself, just have a look at the articles' history: Sonic 2 Alpha, Sonic 2 Beta. --32X 17:32, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

We've already decided that the articles were entirely almost Original Reserach, with all the damn speculation. Ashura96 17:05, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Given that the ROMs are intellectual property, and Wikipedia is a widely-viewed site, aren't we (in a roundabout way) sort of encouraging piracy by linking to them? PeanutCheeseBar 23:01, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

No, because the roms are of an unfinished product, so there is no harm given that Sega did not make a profit from any prototype version of Sonic 2 via retail sales.Ashura96 23:17, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Just because they are unfinished and not sold in this state doesn't mean there's no copyright on them. --32X 04:56, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Sega still owns the copyright on the Sonic the Hedgehog (the character, not the game), and even if the ROM was not copyrighted or protected as IP, the characters within the game most certainly are. That aside, I don't see the harm in leaving in a mention of the prototype, but leaving a link to the ROM doesn't strike me as a good idea; besides, a quick Google search could likely turn up results containing the ROM. --PeanutCheeseBar 16:15, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, just link to www.s2beta.com, not the rom it self or a rom dl page Ashura96 17:55, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Ai-ai

I feel that the Trivia section should include that one of the games enemies Ai-ai might have been the inspiration for Ai-Ai of Super Monkey Ball. Angry Sun 17:23, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

There is no proof of that anywhere... Ashura96 17:51, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Well there may not be proof but there is certainly something there...

Considering both characters were created by the same company. Angry Sun 17:55, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Just...no, show me some proof. No one has ever made that connection. Another example: Capcom has two well know characters named Ryu, one from Street Fighter, and the other from Breath of Fire, are they related? NO. Do they have ANYTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER? No. Ashura96 18:00, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

End-of-Act Super Sonic Bug

I'm sorry, Ashura96 - I placed this on your talk page when it really should have gone here. Concerning these lines -

There was a bug with this feature - when the player reverts back to "normal Sonic" at the end of an act, if he or she then jumps again (as long as he or she has more than 50 rings) after crossing the signpost or pressing the the switch on the egg capsule they will transform back into Super Sonic but will be stuck in mid-air, often walking or running on the spot. They will be unable to transform back.

... I placed the original structure of these into the article, including the words "nor finish the act" at the end. In my case, when I transformed back into Super Sonic after passing the flag/smashing the egg capsule at the end of the act, I WOULD be unable to go onto the next act - was mine an isolated case? Monkey Chief 19:41, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

see my talk page for response. Wait a minute, you did pass the act sign/break the capsule? that is bizzare, did the Sonic Got Through Act screen appear or no?阿修羅96 19:50, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, after a long stream of edits, I'm fairly sure that the screen did NOT appear - if I were to jump again before the message appears, the music would briefly change to the Super Sonic music, but then change back to the music for the act and Sonic would return to his normal blue self, running or walking on the spot. The end of act message would not appear. Monkey Chief 19:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

"Remember, once it has already appeared you cannot jump " - you mean act 1 right? If you put Sonic on the right edge of the screen, where he is half off, just jump in place and you will be able to move around, and act 2 should also allow you to move around. Wow this is weird. As for the content, we'll go ahead and leave it as it is. 阿修羅96 20:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Perfect! Here is a YouTube video showing exactly what I described. In the video description, the poster says that "it's stuck for good if this happens, and you'll need to reset" - just as I said. [1] Monkey Chief 20:18, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah, yes now I remember, I would only jump on Act 2 after the screen appeared, or I was playing with debug mode on. 阿修羅96

In the light of this video, I suggest that we edit the article to mention this glitch, citing the YouTube content as a reference. What do you think? Monkey Chief 20:32, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Since you didn't reply, I decided to add it anyway. Remove it again if you like. Monkey Chief 21:19, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

After exploring the external links at the bottom of the page, I found further evidence of the bug's existence - but only in early releases of the game - the bug was fixed in the version(s) of the game that was/were put into collections (of multiple Sonic or Sega games). I added this to the article, too. Monkey Chief 22:16, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Leave the Zones...

There's no reason to remove the zones. The other Sonic articles have them, so why not this one? This is Wikipedia (read: "Internet Encyclopedia"), and as far as that goes, there needs to be information of the game in the article. (71.84.126.173 08:56, 23 August 2007 (UTC))

Here's a reason: It doesn't mean anything, especially to someone who hasn't played the game. Including descriptions would just be in-game minutiae for the sake of in-game minutiae, which goes against our house style. Nifboy 14:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Here's a reason they needn't be removed: I came here looking for them. Good job at being the stereotypical whackjob wikipedia article editor. I'm going to make a final edit, including the zones. Do not remove them. This is Wikipedia (again, read: "Internet ENCYCLOPEDIA), And here you're trying to tell me it isn't "in style" to include information? Come on... Cite a better reason if you honestly believe they needn't be included. It's the equivalent of having a plot summary, except that this game has no plot, but follows a simple stage setup.(71.84.126.173 21:42, 23 August 2007 (UTC))
I WAS LOOKING FOR THEM TOO! Claycrow (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 12:16, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

HEY! why do you remove the zones

I came here looking for the zone names because i needed to download the specific game-music for the zones, i thought it was a shame no one has added them so I added them, but then you remove it. WHY? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.233.185.216 (talk) 22:07, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

The zones are not listed because there is nothing in a list of zones that will help the reader understand the game, therefore such lists have no place on Wikipedia, as Wikipedia is not a game guide. There are many sites out there that are, and they will undoubtedly carry such information for those that want it. Miremare 23:27, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, well too bad that you don't see zones as facts, because i do, they are facts, and wikipedia is all about facts. can't we have them under "additional information" then? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.233.185.216 (talk) 23:25, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

Of course they're facts, but this is an encyclopedia rather than a game site, so we have to go by the rules of writing an encyclopedia article. This means describing, in prose, what makes the game what it is. The names of the zones themselves are not necessary to achieve this, and do not add to the understanding of those who have not played the game. And remember people who have not played the game are who the article is aimed at. Miremare 22:39, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

If it counts for anything, I'll add my opinion. I don't think that a list of zones is a bad idea. It doesn't exactly clutter the article, and it's the sort of thing I look for in Wikipedia, too. Monkey Chief 23:31, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Weird stream of web addresses in the references section.

I can't copy and paste it. It doesn't show. Sorry, I'm not used to to the editing system in Wikipedia. You'll have to look yourself - go to the "references" section and look at reference one. There is a hyperlink to a YouTube video and then a long stream of HTML (Is it HTML, or a similar-functioning code?). I don't know how to get rid of it because it doesn't appear in the edit section. Can someone else do it, please? Monkey Chief 23:28, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Done. Someone hadn't closed the ref tag. Miremare 22:40, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Prototype

I removed the mention of a supposed "older prototype" version (diff) as there doesn't seem to be any kind of proof at the link provided that it isn't just another of the many hacked versions of Sonic 2 that can be found on the web. If anyone's got a source to prove the claim, please add it back in. Miremare 18:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I put it back in. Here is some proof that it is a legit version - Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3. Only legit development prototypes were burned on SEGA brand development cartridges with EPROMs like these. You can't possibly have 'more proof' because no developer will acknowledge this kind of thing. I am the owner of this cartridge and I bought it from a magazine that reviewed the game - what kind of proof can you have for this kind of thing? 83.14.173.220 21:00, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

That's all very well but, without wanting to sound impolite, how do we know that the cartridge in those pics contains the code referred to in the removed section? There's a problem with verifiability and original research by doing it this way. Miremare 21:13, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, theoritically I could upload a video of me transfering the cart's contents to a PC again as 'proof'. But then again, the same applies to the Beta released earlier - following these standards you cannot possibly verify that it's not a hack without advanced knowledge about Megadrive programming, creating a bit of a catch-22 situation. Maybe the presence of a lot official uncompiled code (with original labels) could prove the authenticity, origin aside? One could not possibly guess the layout and names of the labels.
Another key evidence would be the TV show the prototype has been dubbed after - Nick Arcade, where an exact Sonic 2 prototype appeared for promotional reasons. Here is a YouTube video of the show in question - http://youtube.com/watch?v=O-Yekmrg44Q The fact that the cart has a hologram sticker(!) suggests that it might have been sent to some promo thing, which further proves the relationship of the cart, the prototype, and the show.
Of course, you cannot prove the authenticity of the prototype with at least a little bit original research. I have tried to reach the original Sonic 2 developers for comment about this prototype cartridge and I was unsuccesful (meaning, I do not have a quote I could paste on my website as definite proof). It's not up to me to decide what is shown on Wikipedia - I tried my best to prove the proto is not fake (and I could give many more reasons that I'm afraid would be too technical). -- 83.14.173.220 (talk) 19:43, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
You're right that we can't really prove that the original beta is genuine, but it's generally accepted to be genuine and has been featured in reliable sources (I think games tm and Retro Gamer have both featured it, and Yuji Naka has commented on it) so it's verifiable as genuine, whether or not it's actually genuine. The concern with this new one is that unless we have coverage of it by a reliable independent source we can't really use it because we don't have the verifiability and are not allowed original research. Is this actually a "new" discovery, as in something that wasn't known to exist before? If so, getting coverage by a mag like Retro Gamer might be possible. Miremare 21:28, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Sonic Retro Project: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD

Although not complete, a community project at Sonic Retro is set to remaking Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with remastered graphics, music, engine and, well, pretty much everything. Is it worth a mention? You can find the development board at the following link. [2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.99.68.132 (talk) 12:27, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This looks like a really promising project, though mention of fan remakes in WP articles is generally frowned upon as per WP:VG/GL. Miremare 18:42, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
I think it would be OK to mention it as long as you can provide reliable references to back up notability claims. If I remember correctly initial plans for the remake were noticed by a few gaming sites, so you can use those. Or wait until it's completed to see the media reaction and deem then if it's notable enough or not to be included in the article. I assume the restrictions in WP:VG/GL only apply in the case you want to make an article solely focusing on the remake as certain game remakes are briefly mentioned in the articles of the game they pay homage to. Various examples of this are AGD remakes of various Sierra On-Line games or the 'Deluxe' version of Maniac Mansion. --Lashiec (talk) 20:01, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Move article

I see no point in having "(16-Bit)" disambiguation if "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" redirects here. I would normally move it myself but it seems we will need an administrator for it and it might need some consensus. So does anyone here support?Lucia Black (talk) 11:34, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

I've thought of this before, but I'm unsure what to do about it. It seems inconsistent to have Sonic 1 be Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 video game) and Sonic 2 be Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), but I'm not sure how to change it so it'd be consistent amongst the iterations of 8-bit, 16-bit, and then Sonic 06 as Sonic the Hedgehog (2006 video game) too... Sergecross73 msg me 14:10, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Thats different because there is Sonic the hedgehog (character) and Sonic the hedgehog (2006 video game) and Sonic the hedgehog (series). So that one isnt so cut and dry. Consistency is good, but not for unnecessary disambiguation. For example "sonic the hedgehog 3" has no disambiguation.21:55, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, Sonic 3 has no disambiguation because it has no alternate 8-bit versions, unlike Sonic 2, which does. Anyways, it's kind of like your Tails situation, I'm okay with it either way, but probably couldn't really muster up a defense if an Admin challenged it either... Sergecross73 msg me 22:03, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
 • In cases like this, one of the article needs a disambiguator and the other does not, depending on which is considered primary topic. Considering Sonic the Hedgehog 2 redirects here, that would seem to imply it is the primary topic, thus the (16-bit) disambiguator is not needed. However the move will require admin assistance as per the histories. Salvidrim! 22:09, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is back to a disambiguation between the two articles: this one and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). It's not clear that this is the primary topic; there will need to be discussion to establish that. —C.Fred (talk) 22:25, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Considering that the time span between the two versions are just a 2-weeks to 1-month time span, most likely the 8-bit version serves as a promotional release. But im positive we will need to verify it. Both articles lack development information. So ill look into it and see what i can find.Lucia Black (talk) 22:34, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
(e/c)Good thinking. I almost did that before realizing it already redirected here -- I assumed, perhaps mistakenly, there was some existing consensus. Salvidrim! 22:35, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Looking for comments on reverted changes

I submitted a number of edits to this article that were, IMO, largely beneficial and they were promptly reverted (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_%2816-bit%29&oldid=587023758). Sergecross73 has commented that "I don't feel like many of these changes are improvements, some seem worse", but this strikes me as a destructive revert and rejects a substantial amount of work that went into making carefully phrased improvements. As it stands, this article is full of grammatical and typographical errors; I feel that identifying and editing such problems is one my greatest strengths, but I am also knowledgeable about the game itself. My edits were targeted primarily at obvious examples of invalid grammar, poor word choice, or awkward phrasing. I don't even think this should be controversial, but I will listen to any comments before I make any additional changes.

Here is a brief rundown of the problems that I noticed:

 • "with critics praising the game for building upon its original's formula" (typo)
 • "The game has sold over 6 million copies, making it the second best selling game on the console, behind only the original" (second comma is redundant)
 • "Since its initial release, the game has be released in several compilations" (typo)
 • "of which were generally positively received as well" (incomplete clause, and the as well portion is redundant)
 • "his army of animals he's placed into robots" (sloppy; at the very least should say that he has placed into robots, although my rephrasing was more descriptive)
 • "Star posts serve as checkpoints, where if Sonic loses a life, he would return to one" (awkward)
 • "A life is lost when Sonic is attacked by an enemy without rings" (unclear; easily misunderstood)
 • "star posts can be run past for an optional Special Stage" (awkward, and also technically inaccurate)
 • "The player with wins in the most number of categories, wins the level" (poor phrasing)
 • "The mode ends when all stages have been completed, or if a player loses all their lives, in which his/her opponent will instantly win." (not a sentence)
 • "The result of this unlocks Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a variation of Sonic 2 where the player instead plays as Knuckles the Echidna, a character that hadn't been introduced until 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3. (run on sentence and/or improper use of comma)
 • "was originally believed to contain time travel elements and also have a port to the Sega CD" (unclear)
 • "time travel was instead implemented in an original Sonic game for the system entitled Sonic the Hedgehog CD. (incorrect use of the word 'entitled')
 • "The game is notorious for having content and levels being removed to the game prior to its release" (typo; should, at the very least, be 'from the game')
 • "In New York in 1992, prior to the game's release, Yuji Naka has remarked that a prototype from a demonstration cartridge that was stolen at a toy show." (not a sentence)
 • "which finally implemented the level into the game" (awkward; excessively wordy)
 • "It received critical acclaim by most gaming reviewers." (better as 'game reviewers')
 • "increased cast of characters and enemies alike" (wordy, no need for the word 'alike')
 • "He would later even have 2 games of his own; both for the Sega Game Gear, in Tails Sky Patrol and Tails Adventure. (improper use of semicolon)

I do not claim to have chosen the perfect words, but I would expect any of my fixes that were deemed as being non-beneficial to be individually addressed and then edited on a case-by-case basis. I cannot see the logic in the wholesale dismissal of what were primarily highly targeted and carefully considered edits, none of which substantially changed the article.

Please note that I am somewhat new to editing the Wikipedia in general (although I am not new to the English language!). As such, please let me know if any of this content belongs elsewhere or is poorly formatted somewhat, or if I have made any fundamental talk page errors in making these comments. --Funk munkey (talk) 00:13, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, for the record its best to make multiple smaller edits rather than one massive one, for this very scenario: a number of your changes were fine, but there were a number of other ones that were not better, whether they be awkward, or not very "encyclopedic sounding". Some examples:
 • Unnecessary use of hyphens ("player-controllable", "well-received")
 • Saying that Sonic falls into an "abyss". (He just falls off-screen)
 • A number of entries that made it extra wordy with no real benefit
 • was made available for download as a preorder bonus for the console versions at GameStop.
 • was made available for download as a bonus for buyers who preordered the console versions from GameStop.
 • For Sonic's 20th Anniversary, Sega released Sonic Generations, a game that remade aspects of various past games from the franchise.
 • For Sonic's 20th Anniversary, Sega released Sonic Generations, a remake that incorporated various elements from previous games in the Sonic franchise.
 • Changing it from "ended" to "automatically terminated" --ended described it just fine, terminated seems like a strange word choice in this instance.
Its not that I objected to many of your proposals above, its just more of the type of stuff I listed above. You can re-implement some parts if you like. Sergecross73 msg me 00:52, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Requested move

The result of the move request was: moved. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had a reasonable history, about 50 edits worth, as it had been a dab page for a long while. I could have moved that history elsewhere, but I couldn't see it ever being useful to anyone so I didn't bother. However, if anyone wants that history to be visible for any reason I'll be happy to retrieve it. Jenks24 (talk) 08:26, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit video game)Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Over the years, contributors to several discussions on this talk page have indicated that this article should be moved to an undisambiguated title, but no formal move request has ever been initiated and no one has undertaken the move. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 already redirects here, so it would seem that the community has already agreed that this is the primary target. This is the second-best-selling game for the Sega Genesis, selling more than 6 million copies. This game should be recognized as the primary target and moved to the undisambiguated title.
