Surname

The article isn't very explicit on what surname Bernard used when he was in Joy Division (Dicken, Albrecht or Sumner). I myself am kind of confused.

I think it should mention that he was born Dicken, the brief period he used the name Albrecht, and his subsequent settling on the name Sumner. If there are no objections I will go ahead and do that. sugarfish (talk) 03:51, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of Sources in Internet, for example Bernard Sumner on Discogs, Bernard Sumner on Russian Wikipedia, on IMDB and so on where it said that his Birth name was Bernard Dicken, his Alternate names was Albrecht, Albrecht-Dickens, Barney Rubble etc. So I think we should to change Birth name line Bernard Sumner → Bernard Dicken. --Antara-2009 (talk) 10:00, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discogs.com, other wikis and imdb are not reliable sources as they are user submitted. We would need a source from a printed publication (book, newspaper, magazine) or from a website that complies with WP:RS and WP:SPS. --JD554 (talk) 11:22, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This page at MySpace claims to be 'official' and gives Sumner's birth name as Bernard Dicken. That page links to the 'Band Website' www.neworderonline.com which gives the same information here (but note here "We are NOT an official New Order website".) Courtesy of the Waterstones reference library, it seems it's a bit more complicated. David Nolan devotes several pages to the issue in a book, acknowledging that it's a murky business. In short, Nolan has it that Sumner was born Sumner, then his mother married someone called Dicken (IIRC it was Dickin, but common sense suggests my memory is faulty). Nolan, David (2007). Currently the article makes no mention of any name besides Sumner. At least a brief acknowledgment that he has used other names is probably in order, if only for people who have seen him listed as Bernard Albrecht. I'm not sure I know the history well enough to attempt the edit - my recollection is that he gave his name as both Albrecht and Sumner during the JD period, and gradually dropped the Albrecht (I don't recall him using Dickens or any other name), but again I'm not confident enough to attempt to change. --CAVincent (talk) 07:07, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely late in the day, but I remember he was known as Albrecht during the 'Unknown Pleasures' era and likely until the death of Curtis. The minimalist approach of Factory Records in their sleeves and record label designs does not name the individual members of the band, and writing and playing credits were the band name. I wonder if the early 'sampler' records have any mention of the name Albrecht. There was some controversy about both Joy Division and New Orders' names, and the images in early JD single releases, as being related to Nazism - I think there were issues relating to the Albrecht for the same reason. I think he was captioned "Albrecht" in some television appearances early on, and was referred to as the same in interviews. If decent credible sources can be found for any of this, then it provides reason to include the name (especially as a redirect). LessHeard vanU (talk) 16:17, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Divorce

The article mentions that the song "Round & Round" is about Sumner's divorce without citing any sources. Meanwhile, the article for the song itself mentions (also without citing a source) that the song is about Sumner's relationship with Tony Wilson of Factory Records. Both seem plausible.
