Opening Paragraph
[edit]Including the fact that their record label, Saddle Creek, is distributed by the Sony Corporation is laughably irrelevant (especially in the first few sentences of the entry), as well as inaccurate. Nearly every major indie label is distributed by a company connected to the major labels - whether it be RED, ADA (the actual company that distributes Saddle Creek releases, if we're being accurate), or others. These distribution companies handle distribution, not promotion or label budget (i.e. the distributor of a major indie label isn't a relevant fact for the opening first sentences of a band's wikipedia page. Also, ADA is a part of Warner Music Group, not Sony. I'm erasing the error on the main page.) Please let the fix stand because I'm right on this one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.134.88.18 (talk) 18:52, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Years Active
[edit]Bright Eyes has been active since before 1998, I believe.
Early years - it says here that the name Bright Eyes comes from Planet of the Apes. Forgive me if I'm being stupid here, and I haven't seen the original 1960s film in a long time, but I remember reading an interview with Conor where he says the name comes from a film where a man keeps calling a girl "bright eyes", and assumed it was the Shirley Temple film, but that was just a guess. Does this actually happen in POTA? Do you think we could add some more detail about the origin of the name?
"Bright eyes" is the nickname Dr Zira gives to Taylor when she first meets him in the original POTA movie, yeah.WolfieSummers (talk) 15:48, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
Bright Eyes live
[edit]Should we mention at all that Oberst gets so drunk by the end of most concerts that he forgets words stumbles around etc? Obviously we would have to find an official source, but just about anyone thats been to a concert of his (within the last year for sure) can verify :)
- If you would really like to include it, you could probably check out some concert reviews for a source. Problem is, musicians getting drunk and acting stupid on stage is not exactly unique and most reviewers probably wouldn't think to mention it. Elvrum 19:16, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- If Oberst hates Texas he should not play shows there.
OCT. 22, 2005 I saw Bright Eyes Live at the Santa Barbara Bowl. He was not drunk in fact he was only drinking tea. It was one of the most amazing concerts i have ever been to in my life. 205.167.120.201 16:45, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Jesse Bradford
I saw Bright eyes play with the L.A. Philharmonic in October, 2007. Conor seemed sober at the concert. However, I saw him play recently with the MVB in San Diego and he was not sober. He was wasted when he came out and only got more drunk, I was amazed that he actually made it though the whole show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.203.148.112 (talk) 17:08, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I saw Bright Eyes support Arab Strap in May 2001; the concert ended with Oberst violently strumming his acoustic guitar, before falling into the drumkit. The audience was indifferent. Augustusgrosz (talk) 22:51, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
"Protest" section?
[edit]I've just beefed up the Clear Channel stuff a little, and wondered whether there might be an argument for seperating out things that could broadly be termed as "protest" activities, which would include Clear Channel, MoveOn.org tour, "When The President Talks To God", etc. That "Recent Years" section is just starting to look a little cluttered. --Wastekiller 02:29, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- That's not a bad idea. All this article is so far is a mini-biography without much information about the music, critical reactions, etc. It needs more sections and "Activism" or the like wouldn't be a bad start. Elvrum 03:23, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Not emo?
[edit]Bright Eyes isn't an emo band? I'm pretty sure all of his songs are depressing(for some reason i love them, though :p)...but i guess that doesn't count as emo?
Bright Eyes are loved by emo and indie listeners. MCR arent emo, neither are afi. Emo is Mineral, Juliana Theory and Sunny Day Real Estate.
No, being depressing does not count as emo.--149.167.194.128 11:11, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I reckon there emo, i mean the guy even sounds like hes crying while he sings
Bright Eyes is not Emo because he is not hardcore. He may be emotional, but that is different. Trebor 22:19, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
"Emo" in this sense doesn't really mean "emotional music," I mean hell most music is emotional; rather, we mean a genre defined by the likes of AFI and My Chemical Romance. If you think Bright Eyes sounds anything like those two, well, listen again a few times :P - anon.
If you think MCR and AFI define emo, I suggest you listen to more actual emo bands - anon
I agree with the above statement -
MCR are these days the archetypal 'emo' band, AFI I would consider to be more of a goth-punk band. Either way, Bright Eyes is not emo, even with the fringe, lol. It is merely lo-fi folk sort of stuff.
Bright Eyes isn't emo?! Wow! I agree with that one kid! He really does sound like he's crying when he's singing! But I guess it's cool??? But why isn't there theme emo? He's sounds depressed in his songs, but w/e!
Songs with depressed "sounds" in them aren't always "emo". To put music into "lable" boxes is to take away from the intended art and should be a crime. 205.240.78.20 04:28, 17 November 2006 (UTC) Typhoid Orchid
Even if I did count "Emo" as a legitimate genre of music, anyone who has really listened to Bright Eyes could hardly call his music emotional hardcore. Now, I will not contest that Oberst himself is emo, because he is, but I disagree that his music is. Adverse Entropy 01:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Want emo? Check out Blue October... --72.94.165.170 02:56, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
i dont think emo is his genre. i think indie or folk or indie folk is alot better than emo. Emo wouldnt do bright eyes justice. if someone who never heard bright eyes before asked you for bright eyes music stlye and you were to tell them emo, they would get a distorted idea of the band. i think indie folk is a better genere discription. (ruiz_abe) feb.25,2007
i think you people like to call hem indie folk because it sounds better than telling your friends i listen to emo bands.
Bright Eyes is not a real emo band. Even trying to fir them in with the post-hardcore indie bands doesn't totally work. The Beatles talked about their emotions, does that make them an "emo" band? Not really. If you want to call them emotionally driven, depressing, whiny, etc. etc., ok. But speaking under musical genres, they're not emo.
And I do tell my friends I listen to emo bands, since that's the technical classification. You're just jumping on the emo dissing bandwagon. Ailes Grises 15:46, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I think they are what emo used to be. Emo is something different now. Ryan Brady 06:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Reverted an edit that removed "emo" but not the "citations needed". I am inclined to call them emo, but... it should probably be decided whether or not that's a tenable position here in the discussion instead on the article with poorly done edits. Ryan Brady 08:33, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- And put in a hidden tag telling people not to remove it? I think the consensus on here is that they're not emo, and I agree with that... I think it should be removed EJBH (talk) 15:16, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Bright eyes has emo influences (their lyrics). So it's not really a matter of being or not being. Their kind of emo folk. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.185.2.225 (talk) 20:45, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
It would definitely be more realistic to label them as alternative country than emo, as it's short for emocore, a portmanteau of emotional and hardcore, the latter of which is an abbreviation of hardcore punk. Now, try to tell me that Bright Eyes is hardcore punk. I dare you. Epigrammed (talk) 13:42, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
They're not emo. Go listen to Cap'n Jazz and then tell me Bright Eyes is emo. Eseress (talk) 09:17, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Factual check-ups
[edit]I pulled out the "This release was the first time that Bright Eyes and Saddle Creek had ever hired a publicist to bring the music to the attention of the media." from the part about Story in the Soil. Holiday Matinee was hired to work press for "Fevers and Mirrors" and the '99 release "Every Day and Every Night." It was also the publicist for The Faint and Cursive before Story in the Soil was released.
Personal Life
[edit]I'm a bit confused at the content of the Bright Eyes page on Wikipedia. Under Future Plans it states
"Conor has been married to Cait for nearly three years. She is currently eighteen. They live in Omaha, NE, in his parents' basement, and have five puppies."
Aside from being an odd post (marrying a 15 year old and all), the Conor Oberst Wiki page states (under Trivia) that Conor is "Is romantically involved with fellow Saddle Creek artist Maria Taylor."
Can somebody clear this up? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 130.179.210.230 (talk) 18:10, 4 January 2007 (UTC).
Sorry if this sounds mean, but, are you kidding me?
- That's exactly what I said. It's clearly false. Don't be stupid, people. Dieter Weber 23:58, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's obviously vandalism.Notahippie76 21:48, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Music videos?
[edit]Would a list of music videos be relevant to this article? I came here looking for a list of music videos he's made for songs, but didn't find any. I suppose a quick google search would work too, but I think it'd be helpful. 71.59.157.40 01:10, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Clear Channel Issue?
[edit]I think it would improve the article to explain why Bright Eyes dislikes Clear Channel, and why Clear Channel in particular and not other, similar corporations.

Digital Ash least impresseive?
[edit]In the part of the article concerned with Wide Awake and Digital Ash it states that:
"While both albums were met with success and generally good reviews many die-hard fans felt Digital Ash was a bit too eccentric and find it to be the least impressive Bright Eyes album to date."
May I remove this last editorial comment on Digital Ash? This is purely conjecture and there is no way to quantify such a thing, let alone confirm or disconfirm such a statement. Who are these die-hard fans? Where can I find them? And where can I read a poll of their opinions? I suggest this is an editorial comment by one die-hard fan in particular - in other words it is OR. If there are no good arguments against my removing it, i'll replace it with something more concrete in a few days (----) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Warchef (talk • contribs) 18:42, 6 May 2007 (UTC).
- You're right, I have removed it. –Pomte 23:50, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Eric Attinger paragraph?
[edit]I just got rid of it... it's completely esoteric, talking at length about the theme from a specific song sandwiched into a general overview of early Bright Eyes. It's out of place and pointless, not to mention, it also seems to be shameless self-promotion, as it was first added by someone using the handle EA2005... coincidentally, the initials to E. Attinger. If anyone can think of a valid reason to keep it, speak up. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.70.127.182 (talk) 05:44, 15 May 2007 (UTC).
Fair use rationale for Image:A Christmas Album (Bright Eyes Album).jpg
[edit]Image:A Christmas Album (Bright Eyes Album).jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Cassadaga Title?
[edit]Does anyone know the story behind naming the album Cassadaga? 204.249.68.152 (talk) 04:18, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassadaga%2C_Florida maybe this will help you. cheers —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.196.209.70 (talk) 18:02, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
the cassadega title comes from the town cassedega florida, a small community of psycics that helped conor sober up. which also explains the more up beat additude of the album. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.27.183.155 (talk) 02:57, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Contributors
[edit]This list was mostly deleted, so i have reverted it for the moment. With discussion from another user, we decided to review the list and refine it back to those artists who feature in the leaflets of his albums, thus having verified, notable references for them having actually worked with the band. This will take some time, so please contact me if you have any problems - just let me do the work. :D Corythepaperboy (talk) 07:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- have updated the list, running through the album sleeves and credits on all of his discography.
Have deleted only a handful, and i found that many of these artists worked with the band on more than one occasion, making them even more worthy of being listed. Some i am still unsure about, and have also corrected a few spelling errors. If you wish to challenge this, or add/delete a name please ensure that you provide a reference. WHO KEEPS ADDING THESE STRANGE CONTRIBUTORS?
I CANNOT FIND ANY SOURCES FOR THEM, SO I WILL REVERT THEM.
I CONSIDER THAT PEOPLE WHO PLAYED LIVE ON STAGE WITH BRIGHT EYES DURING A TOUR (eg MEMBERS OF THE FAINT)
ARE NOT WORTHY OF BEING NOTED AS "CONTRIBUTORS"
THIS TITLE IS MORE SUITED TO COLLABORATORS WHO CREATED TRACKS ON THEIR ALBUMS.
Agree?

[edit]Bright Eyes did not record in November, even though earlier in the summer Conor stated they would. Conor and the Mystic Valley Band toured til the end of November and then (NOT BRIGHT EYES) recorded at a studio in Texas in December. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crooked spin (talk • contribs) 00:12, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Are they still active?
[edit]The band seems to be on hiatus since 2007, at least to me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.229.209.251 (talk) 20:46, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
I think you're right. Conor is working with a new band, "Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band" and they've put out two albumbs since then, so I think bright eyes may be finished. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.206.244.107 (talk) 14:50, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
I realize this is an old comment, but according to the Saddle Creek store, Bright Eyes reconvened with Neva Dinova in the fall of 2009 to work on new tracks for the One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels reissue. FlyingVictrola (talk) 23:44, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Discography - upcoming album
[edit]"Ketamine Fears and Hope (Spring 2011)" - this seems dubious to me as there's no other reference to this title on the web. Is this profound insider knowledge (phew) or just bogus? In either case it's probably out of place here for the time being. 24.7.159.28 (talk) 06:33, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Origin of name
[edit]Hi, guys. I'm not really sure if you want to add this, but here is Shakespeare's sonnet one.
From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beauty's rose might never die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heir might bear his memory: But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes, Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel, Making a famine where abundance lies, Thy self thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Note the last two words of the fifth line: "bright eyes". According to http://www.williamshakespeare-sonnets.com/sonnet-1 "The youth is “contracted to thine own bright eyes,” ‘betrothed or drawn to his own eyes,’ or like Narcissus, ‘sees encapsulated (“contracted”) in his own eyes his reflected image:’" Which is a reference to Ovid and the classics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.252.47.57 (talk) 04:52, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

No discussion of any members except Conor Oberst?
[edit]The section on the band's history needs to be updated with the contributions of the other band members, including when each joined the project. It also needs to pruned somewhat, or some of the information needs to be split off into other new sections. Right now it's basically an extended discography and discussion of Conor Oberst.
