Wikipedia talk:Categorized Deletion
Category basis
[edit]Fields of knowledge is not the best way to split this up. Subdivision based on reasons for deletion would be much better. This would allow items listed under the highly dubious criterion of "notability" to be separated from other criteria at "VfD - Notability". That single basis causes more contention than any other. With that removed from acceptable criteria for the mainstream of the VfD page I'm sure that that page could regain some semblance of order. Different criteria could even require different levels of support before facing deletion. The more contentious the criterion, the greater the support that would be required for its deletion.
Having "VfD - High schools" is pointless when there is a substantial part of the community that feels that all high schools merit an entry. Deleting such an article needs to depend on a criterion other than "notability". Eclecticology 18:52, 2004 Oct 25 (UTC)
- It is precisely to determine standardized criterion for specific fields of knowledge by getting Wikipedians who care about a particular field together to reach a consensus that can then be applied systematically to articles in that field that this proposal is being advocated. "Subdivision based on reasons for deletion" does not work because often people on VfD disagree on what precisely the reasons for deletion are—and what do you do in the case of where there are multiple reasons to delete an article? —Lowellian (talk)[[]] 21:38, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)
- If people disagree on what the reasons are that is all the more reason to avoid dispersing the request by topic. Because the problems will be more spread out it will make it easier to have deletions succeed because fewer people will monitor the specialized pages. Before we work on criteria for specific fields we need to have consensus for general criteria that apply in all fields. Stating reasons for deletion is the responsibility of the person making the initial request; where there are multiple reasons available he should place the request under the reason which he feels has the greatest chance of success. - Except in the case of notability, we already do have criteria that apply in all fields. —Lowellian (talk)[[]] 12:32, Oct 27, 2004 (UTC)
I think the general principle of this proposal has merit, but it's too complicated as written. Maurreen 06:49, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed. Definitely this and Preliminary Deletion will be helpful to curb VfD somewhat. Andre (talk) 23:59, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)
- Not a bad idea, but wouldn't it encourage vote-by-rote (e.g. 'all <foo> must be kept/deleted' rather than evaluating each individual foo). Radiant_* 15:33, Apr 14, 2005 (UTC)
Ick
[edit]Instruction creep. It's already hard for many people to get the procedures right for adding items to VfD. You want to make it even more complicated? RickK 23:38, May 23, 2005 (UTC)
Category system
[edit]Given that newer versions of the MediaWiki software now support categories, this Categorized Deletion system could be implemented more easily. —Lowellian (talk) 14:38, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
