It would be good to adjust the balance of this entry: of course most people know of Trevor Roper because of the Hitler Diary debacle, but that was one error in a lifetime of some real achievement.
BTW, one of the books he did not write, but which I heard him describe in some detail, was the case for the Earl of Oxford as author of the plays and sonnets credited to Shakespeare. Asekers 19:26 Feb 9, 2003 (UTC)
