Part one's mythology

[edit]

Part one has always seemed more Middle European than Scandinavian to me. The names are German, too. -- Kizor 19:30, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

As there was (IIRC) only one specifically Scandanavian character, I've changed that section accordingly. -Sean Curtin 01:54, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)
Many thanks. The giant didn't register as a Jotun to me, just as a great big blue guy. -- Kizor 01:32, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
The giant WAS a Jotun. He mentions Jotunheim in dialogue Pictureuploader 09:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

Was Quest for Glory II actually published as Hero's Quest II? I know the original game was published as Hero's Quest, and the ending even referred to an upcoming Hero's Quest II: Trial by Fire, but the copy I have is titled Quest for Glory II. Mikko Luukkonen 10:14, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

That's correct, the only place where I've seen it mentioned as HQII was on the first game ending. \ wolfenSilva / 20:26, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)
This may not mean much, as I was only a child at the time, but recall a cousin of mine had a save-disk with the title "Hero's Quest 2" hand written on it. Whether he did that because the game was actually named that, or because he stubbornly stuck to the original title, well.... your guess is as good as mine. Kuhan 05:10, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The most likely explination for me is that he labelled the disk Hero's Quest 2 because it contained his character from the end of "Hero's Quest 1." Since the ending of the game said to insert a disk to save a character for hero's quest 2, it would make sense to give the disk that label while waiting for the game to come out.--BigCow 05:35, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are screenshots around the web that show the original loading screens from Quest for Glory II, using the original Hero's Quest moniker. It's assumed that the game was originally Hero's Quest II, and while in production, the name was changed due to the legal complications. --Brendan 16:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Part five of a four part limited series

[edit]

The fifth game was allegedly made only because so many fans demanded it of the original designers

While I think this was true in terms of economics, my understanding was that from a creative point of view, it was actually the third game which was inserted into the series. In fact, if I recall, the end of QfGII advertises QfGIII as being Shadows of Darkness, rather than Wages of War, which would support this theory. Also, the fact that each of the first four games ends with the hero going somewhere, whereas the last game has a more definite ending. --Plicease 03:04, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The game has a more definitive ending because the developers were already well aware that it would be the last of the series. I'll quote from the SPECIAL.TXT file in the install CD:

A NOTE FROM THE TEAM

Many of you have been with us since the mist-drenched days of Hero's Quest. Others of you joined us along the way, in Raseir, Fricana, and Mordavia. You deluged Sierra with petitions after the series was canceled. This game was made solely because you demanded it. Well, this is it. Your long wait is finally over. This is the final episode of Quest for Glory.

We'd like you to plan to finish Quest for Glory 5 on your own, without any hints. It might be frustrating but just savor the game. It'll be over sooner than you wish. Don't let anyone spoil things for you. Once you finish, you'll have wonderful memories of the journey. We'll miss you...

Thanks for everything. Lori, Corey, and the QFG5 Team

About the change of setting of QFG III, IIRC it was nothing more than a personal decision by the developers who've felt that the paladin helping Rakeesh in his homeland would turn to be a better follow-up.

\ wolfenSilva / 05:25, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

That is fair enough, I seem to remember reading something like this in InterAction, or something, but I recall it in the context of an insertion of an episode rather than a replacement. I still argue that it is strange that QfG IV ended with Erasmus yanking the hero out to the QfG V locale to do hero stuff if they intended to stop there. --Plicease 05:33, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Just to clarify, I am not saying the statement is wrong (in fact, I believe it to be correct), I just think more detail might be appropriate. --Plicease 05:41, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I've just checked Transolar Games' QFG page, and here's THE reason:

How does a four-game series become five games?
The ending of "Trial by Fire" indicated that the next game in the series would be "Shadows of Darkness." However, we had a two year break from the series while we were making Educational games, and we didn't want to introduce new players to the horror genre of "Shadows of Darkness" until they had played a more traditional fantasy genre. So we added "Wages of War" to balance things out.

There. Also has lots of interesting information and trivia to be added to the article. \ wolfenSilva / 05:44, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit]

The games description was copied from the series overview from this page. As the edits were made by one anon IP, there's no way of knowing if it's the same, so they're out until someone claims the edit. The entries looked too reviewish to have been written for wikipedia, and on top of that, the QFGV entry was the same that was written before. A quick google search from a random paragraph, and voilá, the source appeared. Even if the editor had permission, the text was completely POVed. wS 07:50, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Big (film)

[edit]

Is the original Quest for Glory the game seen in the opening scene of the Tom Hanks film Big? Or is it another similar game? TKarrde 00:12, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've never seen the movie, but I googled the script.

You are standing in the cavern of the evil wizard. All around you are the carcasses of slain ice dwarfs...Melt the wizard. What do you want to melt him with? What do you think I want to melt him with...(Josh, don't forget to take out the garbage) Just a second! Throw the...(Josh, did you hear what your mother said?) One minute! (Josh Baskin!) Your hesitancy has cost you dearly. The wizard, sensing your apprehension, unleashes a fatal blow from the ice scepter. With luck, you will thaw in several million years. Great.

Sounds like more of a text based game to me, is that what you were referring to? Someone else investigating this issue online concluded that since the game in the movie isn't credited to any company in particular, it must have been made for the movie itself.

Come to think of it, it -does- sound more like a text-based game, I just hadn't thought of that since the movie featured graphics for the game. It seems odd that they would've gone through the trouble of creating it for the movie alone instead of using some obscure game that had been out for a few years (as back then videogames were usually the brainchild of one or a few people instead of entire companies, and thus lawsuits over copyright infringement were rare). I've googled various parts of that script excerpt, all I get is links to an Atari forum where some user has that excerpt as their signature. Disappointing. TKarrde 02:11, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but I can guarantee it's not from the quest for glory series if nothing else, and the fact that it received no credit is usually a pretty good sign. Sorry though. Oh, and nice Talon Karrde reference in your username. Incidentally, if you have a big interest in Quest for Glory you'd be welcome to contribute to the Wikibook for the series as well.--BigCow 02:21, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The BEST sign is that the movie was from 1988 and the game is from 1990 (producted in 1989). Pictureuploader 06:36, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I remember seeing this in the movie and that it reminded me of the king's/hero's quest series but i am sure it wasn't one of the sierra series at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.117.101.190 (talk) 23:56, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone remember Wizard and the Princess/Adventure in Serenia well enough to confirm if that is the game? The title is from adventure game powerhouse Sierra's precursor/founders very early days and the timing is about right (1979 or 1980) for something abandoned enough to be obscure. I think the graphics fit pretty well too. VanIsleDD (talk) 17:30, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Article

[edit]

I think the article is getting a little crazy with all of the images (with the additions of the most recent pictures). Perhaps they should be put somewhere else (like the picture of Lori could go with the article on Lori) or removed. (Gazel.)

I personally like having the boxes and images from each of the games, I think it adds a lot. The picture of Lori isn't strictly neccessary though, it might work better on her article. Oh, and are any of the images up on the wikimedia commons? They could be used to enhance the Quest for Glory Wikibook as well.--BigCow 05:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like having the box and in-game images as well. I guess I am referring specifically to the Lori image and the image of the Artist working on the Saurus.

Also: Perhaps an index page of some sort should be made if pages are going to be made detailing characters and beasts from the series. Maybe pages should be created for "Characters of QG" and "Monsters of QG" so that they can be taken off of the main Quest for Glory article. (Gazel)

Suggested edits have been made. (The Gazel Ministry)

Are you sure you don't want to divide the "Characters of QG" and "Monsters of QG" onto seperate pages? I'm not sure if dividing all of the characters into groupings by game really works all that well considering many of the characters appear in multiple QFG games. (Pretzolio)

It's a good idea. I'm sure that that will be done. I just didn't feel like doing it yesterday; and it's really not that pressing since there is really only one monster. IMO the Kobold is more of a character than a monster ... (Gazel Ministry)

Quest for Glory III, Elements, Seasons

[edit]

I'd suggest that a few things be put in: 1. The reference to the fact that the series was originally to be only 4 games and that III was the extra (as mentioned above). 2. That each game in the series was to have an element and a season associated with it (when it was designed as 4 parts). The first was earth and spring, second fire and summer, third air and fall and four was to be water and winter. The most obvious of these are QfG2 (fire and summer) and QfG4 (see screenshots for the fall look - remember, this was to be the third game originally). I haven't played 5 so I can't vouch for water and winter but I heard that's the first game you could swim in. Here's a link speaking about this.

That's very interesting - thanks! - though the fifth one takes place in a meditarrenean climate. It might as well be winter, it's unnoticeable. --Kizor 08:23, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That is interesting, I had kind of wondered about that myself. Quest for Glory IV has a few lines about the fall climate, and the Burgomeister remarks that the days are growing shorter and Winter is approaching. The first two games fit the connection well also, although the tie-ins to different cultures is even more obvious in terms of the game settings. I'd look for some interviews by the creators or some primary sources on that one, there are a lot of interviews online and the Coles themselves are still around luckily.--BigCow 22:50, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know that the element/season relationship was mentioned in an old InterAction article I have sitting around in storage somewhere - I think it was about the time QFGIII came out, though possibly QFGIV. Dunno if there are any IA archives online where it could be found, though. Virogtheconq 22:53, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I created a footer to make it easier to access the pages about the Quest for Glory game because it was rather difficult to navigate around the pages without it. Did I include too much information, too little or the right amount? Andrew D White 01:47, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't make out some letters. I am using Firefox in Linux. Please check Pictureuploader 08:17, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you still have the problem now that I have changed the size? If you are which version are you using? Andrew D White 12:06, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the info box at the bottom is way too heavy on the information, particularly given the number of red links. I think it makes more sense to let the info box be directing you to summary type pages on each game in the series, so you could have a link to a List of Quest for Glory I Characters, a List of Quest for Glory II characters, etc. It takes up more than a page in size, I just think that's too big.BigCow 01:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's too big for any encyclopedia other than a QfG wiki. Wikipedia is not going to be an index for all places and characters of the saga. There was a QfG wiki a year ago but nobody participated so it closed Pictureuploader 10:29, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, perhaps it should be restarted. It seems as there are numerous particpants and individuals interested.
I have made the footer so that it hides most of itself for purposes of brevity. Is this any better? Andrew D White 18:47, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Concept

[edit]

I added this section to the article. I researched the information in the internet, and from an article in interaction i remember reading. OmerMor 16:45, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that adds a lot to the article.--BigCow 19:36, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'm the one who started the "Quest for Glory III, Elements, Seasons" section asking for this. I really appreciate it. -GameCreator (I really need to start an account)
You're welcome! :-) I'm still looking for a scan or a transcript of the original InterAction Magazine article with the Coles about this. If anyone knows where to find it It would be great... --OmerMor 20:24, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had several at home, but I think my parents may have recycled them.... Next time I'm there I'll see if I can find them. Virogtheconq 01:05, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Has anyone found the InterAction article yet? I'm really curious about that... OmerMor 17:56, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Just like with the Glorianna page, this article had a long list of links that is superfluous to the article. Wikipedia is NOT for a collection of links.

Furthermore, Hero6 has its own article and is now listed in the Quest for Glory category. Project Katrina is dead (if it ever was really alive in the first place). Regardless, though, a fan-made game section (one that is merely links) should not be in this main article about the Quest for Glory series. Including it undermines the credibility of the article, and only functions as advertisement/superfluous links.

Fair use rationale for Image:Qfganth.jpg

[edit]

Image:Qfganth.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:51, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Revamped Games Section

[edit]

I have completely edited the games section of this page to be more in line with modern series pages such as Bioshock or Assassin's Creed, including the ratings on the side, links to the game's main pages and short summaries of each game. I'd appreciate any feedback, especially in regards to the summaries. I have not played each game so I really only copied information from each game's page. I tried to give a general overview of the plot without using anything that sounded like a spoiler. Also, if there were relevant things such as information on the VGA remakes, I put that as well. Finally, I'd like to talk about the roman numerals. I looked up the box art for the first game and it does use the roman numeral I despite the wiki pages not including that. Also, this page originally used Quest for Glory IV with the roman numeral despite the game not using them. I kept this section in line with the original box arts for the games but I won't fight anyone with a good reason to keep it the same as other Wikipedia pages. Also, this is my first major revamp of a section on Wikipedia so if I did something wrong, please let me know. Thanks!
